Otoplasty is usually performed under a general anaesthetic as day surgery.
During the procedure an incision is made behind the ear so it isn’t visible. The cartilage in the ear is then re-shaped to reduce the prominence of your ears. Sometimes small segments of cartilage may need to be excised to correct the shape completely. At the completion of the operation the incision is closed with dissolving sutures and a dressing will be applied.
The operation itself will take about one hour and once completed your anaesthetist will wake you. After surgery you will be taken to the recovery room where you will be closely observed by our experienced nursing staff. They will take care of you until you are fully awake and ensure that you are comfortable. You will be allowed to go home once you have fully recovered from your general anaesthetic which is usually three hours after the operation is completed.
After your operation it is very important that you remain in the care of a responsible adult who will stay with you overnight. Your anaesthetist will prescribe pain killers for you in the days following your surgery. There will be mild discomfort following your operation and it is advisable that you take it easy for the first week. Most children take one week off school. Children can return to swimming and gentle activities after two weeks. More physical activities including contact sport can be resumed after six weeks.
